There are certain key elements that make a successful sport franchise, and in this article we will look at three of the greatest franchises in the three major sports of basketball, football and baseball.
The New York Yankees
Quite simply, the New York Yankees are the best baseball team of all time. A whole host of legends have worn the famous Yankee pin stripes, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. With talent at this level it is no wonder that the Yankees have gone on to win an astonishing 27 World Series ensuring their status as the greatest baseball team and making them a viable contender for status as the US’ greatest sport franchise.
The famous Celtic green represents more than just a basketball team: it is a whole form of culture, a mentality that permeates above and beyond the basketball court. With 17 NBA titles with the most recent one coming in 2008, it is no wonder the Celtics carry themselves with so much swagger. Under legendary coach Red Auerbach and the immense talent of Bill Russell, the Celtics truly dominated the 50s and 60s era of basketball winning an astonishing 11 titles in 13 years. Such dominance in the sports has never been matched even by the later iconic teams such as Jordan’s Bulls and the ‘show time’ Lakers, giving the Celtics the title of the NBA’s greatest sport franchise.
Known as America’s team, the Cowboys success in the 90s was a combination of steely leadership, determination as well as extraordinary flair. Winning three super bowls in four years the Cowboys’ greatness helped cement the NFL’s popularity at a time of exploding TV ratings, putting them forward alongside the aforementioned Celtics and Yankees as on the most successful franchises in the long and storied history of American sports.
